Letters

  • Athletes earn a varsity letter (an LOL with a Gator on it) for participation on a varsity team that meets the coaches’ criteria as explained at the parent meeting.  For most team sports, this means playing on the varsity team.  For most individual sports, qualifying for districts is a common requirement.
  • Some sports have used booster club funds to purchase JV letters (an L) for those athletes whose participation does not qualify them for a varsity letter.  These letters are only awarded once, for the first JV sport that has chosen to distribute them.

Student-Athletes of the Month

Each month coaches select an outstanding player who is not only succeeding on the field, but in the classroom (all A’s and B’s in current courses).  These students are recognized by the Athletic Department with a variety of rewards generously donated from local businesses who sponsor the program: Club Air Sportswear, Beef O’Brady’s, Papa John’s, LifeSource Health & Wellness, Xtreme Adventures, Texas Roadhouse, Cold Stone, and the LOLHS Athletic Booster Club.

Athlete Scholarships

Each year the booster club uses all of the money it collects from football parking and supplements it with additional funds to provide scholarships to graduating seniors.  To qualify, students must have played at least one sport, at any level, sometime during their tenure at the school, provide letters of recommendation, and have a 3.0 GPA.  Applications are typically available in March, are due by May 1st, and winners are announced at the annual Celebration of Excellence in May.

Golden Gator Award

This award was given for the first time to members of the Class of 2013.  It recognizes the graduating seniors (one male and one female) who have contributed the most time and talent to Gator Athletics over the last four years.  If more than one senior of the same gender earn the same amount of points for team participation (10 for each Varsity season, 5 for JV), then the tie-breaker will be determined as follows:

  • Number of Varsity seasons
  • Number of different sports where a Varsity letter was earned
  • Weighted, cumulative GPA

If a tie still exists, players will share the honor for that year.

Sunshine Athletic Conference Academic Team

Athletes who earn TWO varsity letters and have a 3.2 unweighted GPA for the first three quarters of the school year will be named to the Academic All Conference Team.  Students in Dual Enrollment courses, which do not report quarter grades, are responsible for printing a report of their current grades at PHSC on the last date of the first and third quarters (October and March) and submitting the report to the Athletic Director.
